By the Upper Crust Catering kitchen

Bacon-wrapped water chestnuts are called rumaki. It is a classic party appetizer and the one people on our phone line usually describe as "the bacon water chestnut thing." Our Rumaki is $64 a tray, 60 pieces, bacon-wrapped water chestnuts, for pick-up in Yorkville or quoted delivery. Plan 2 to 3 pieces a guest when there are other appetizers, so one tray covers 20 to 30 guests. Call or text (630) 553-9533.
What rumaki is
Rumaki is a small bite wrapped in bacon, a staple of mid-century party and tiki-style menus. Older recipes use chicken livers with a water chestnut; the version most people mean today, and the one we make, is the water chestnut wrapped in bacon. Each piece is one bite.
How many to order
- 2 to 3 pieces a guest with other appetizers: 60 pieces feeds 20 to 30.
- 4 to 5 pieces a guest if appetizers lead into a late dinner: 60 pieces feeds 12 to 15.
For 40 guests with other food, order about 100 to 120 pieces: two trays, $128 before tax ($139.84 with 9.25% sales tax).
What goes with it
Rumaki is rich, so pair it with something fresh or sharp. Good partners from our menu: Fresh Vegetable Crudités ($59), Antipasto Kabobs ($74, 50 pieces) and the Assorted Cheese Tray with Crackers ($69). For a bigger hot course, Cocktail Meatballs are $64 for 100 pieces. The full list of trays and prices is in our catered appetizers guide.
